Max Muncy….Munce and he was known here, was drafted by the Oakland A’s yesterday in the fifth round. Max is a great kid and helped the Indians win a lot of games as a First Basemen, Catcher and Pitcher during his time with the Indians. One of the sweetest left handed swings I’ve ever seen in a high school player. Max was drafted by the Indians out of High School but decided to turn down their offer and attend Baylor.
Baylor junior first baseman Max Muncy, senior catcher Josh Ludy and junior center fielder Logan Vick were selected on the second day of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday.
Muncy was selected in the fifth round by the Oakland Athletics, Ludy was picked in the eighth round by the Philadelphia Phillies, and Vick went in the 11th round to the Cleveland Indians. Rounds 16-50 of the draft will be held Wednesday.
Muncy is the first Baylor player to be drafted by the Athletics since Trent Weaver went in the 29th round of the 1989 draft, Ludy is the first Bear to be taken by the Phillies since Craig Fritsch was chosen in the 16th round in 2010, and Vick is the first BU player selected by the Indians since Raynor Campbell in the 31st round of 2010.
With the three selections, Baylor has now had multiple draft picks in 14 of the last 15 MLB drafts and at least one Bear has been chosen in every draft since 1991. The Bears have had 120 total draft selections in program history.
As juniors, Muncy and Vick will have until July 13 to decide whether to sign professional contracts or return to Baylor for their senior seasons. Ludy doesn’t have a signing deadline because he is in the final season of his collegiate eligibility.
Muncy, a two-time first-team All-Big 12 honoree, is a career .311 hitter with 38 doubles, six triples, 27 home runs, 151 RBI, 140 runs scored and 18 stolen bases in 181 games in three seasons at Baylor. He has started 145 consecutive games at first base and is Baylor’s career leader with 1,623 putouts.
