I was planning on going to the meet and greet last night but had conflicting meetings. I will say this about the new guy, he has a background in sports and comes from two very successful football programs (Celina and Tyler), our AD and Coaches should be looking over thier shoulders. Now we have to see how he runs the financial aspects of the district.

KELLER — School trustees Thursday night voted unanimously to hire a longtime Texas educator to take over as new superintendent for the 33,000-student Keller district.

Randy Reid, now superintendent of the Tyler school district, will be paid a base salary of $230,000 plus $800 a month for a car allowance and $150 a month for cell phone usage and a $12,000 annual contribution to a supplemental retirement plan.

Compared with the compensation package of his predecessor, James Veitenheimer, Reid will earn about $7,000 more a year. However Veitenheimer likely would have received the same 3 percent raise administration officials are recommending for all employees.

Reid leaves Tyler after five years as superintendent.

“In Keller, I have the opportunity to be in a district already operating at a high level,” Reid said.

He said his first order of business will be to get to know staff and community members, then he will address the challenges facing districts across Texas — tight budgets and rising academic requirements.

Before Tyler, Reid spent two years as superintendent in Celina. Most of his 31 years in education were in Richardson, where he went from teacher to coach to assistant superintendent.

In other business, the board voted 5-2 to continue using Clayton Youth Enrichment Services (YES) for before- and after-school child care for the 2012-13 school year. Board President Kevin Stevenson and Secretary Cindy Lotton cast dissenting votes.

At the July 19 meeting, administration officials had considered changing the care provider to one with a program that was more academically rigorous. Trustees tabled the measure after about 100 parents came to the meeting, many of them to speak against making a change

“Just because a vendor has been with us for 20 years doesn’t mean they get a pass from being reviewed,” Stevenson said. “If our before-and-after-school care provider is not providing an extension of our curriculum, I don’t know if public education should be involved in day care.”

District officials said staying with Clayton was due primarily to timing.
